Lab menus can look like alphabet soup.
CBC. CMP. TSH. A1C. LDL. SHBG.
Understanding what these tests actually measure makes it easier to have an informed conversation about your health and choose appropriate testing.
Our Boca Raton Local Lab offers individual cash-pay tests as well as bundled wellness testing, with appointments available Monday through Friday.
Here is what some of the most commonly requested blood tests actually tell you—and what they do not.
CBC: Complete Blood Count
A complete blood count measures several components of your blood, including red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, hemoglobin and hematocrit.
Healthcare professionals commonly use CBCs as part of routine health evaluation and when assessing issues involving anemia, infection, immune disorders and other conditions.
The key word is assessment.
A CBC can show that a measurement is outside a laboratory reference range, but it does not automatically tell you why. Many different factors can affect blood-cell measurements.
Our current General Lab Work menu lists CBC testing as an individual cash-pay option.
If you already know that you need a CBC or another individual laboratory marker, review Avendano Health's General Lab Work options for current testing availability and cash-pay pricing.
CMP: Comprehensive Metabolic Panel
A CMP measures 14 substances in the blood and provides information related to metabolism, glucose, electrolytes, proteins and markers associated with liver and kidney function.
Common components include glucose, calcium, sodium, potassium, chloride, albumin, total protein, bilirubin, liver enzymes, BUN and creatinine.
That makes the CMP useful as a broad metabolic and organ-function snapshot—but again, an abnormal result is not a diagnosis by itself.
Patients who want a CMP together with other commonly requested health markers may also want to compare Avendano Health's Wellness Lab Bundles rather than ordering every test individually.
Lipid Testing: Cholesterol and Cardiovascular Risk
A standard lipid panel generally evaluates cholesterol-related measurements such as total cholesterol, LDL, HDL and triglycerides.
These measurements help clinicians evaluate cardiovascular risk in combination with factors such as age, blood pressure, smoking status, diabetes and medical history.
Rather than focusing on a single number in isolation, discuss your overall cardiovascular risk profile with an appropriate healthcare professional.
TSH: A Common Starting Point for Thyroid Evaluation
TSH stands for thyroid-stimulating hormone.
TSH is produced by the pituitary gland and signals the thyroid gland to produce thyroid hormones.
A TSH measurement can help identify whether thyroid activity may be too high or too low, although TSH alone does not establish the underlying cause of a thyroid problem.
Depending on the result and clinical situation, additional thyroid testing may be appropriate.
What About Hormone Testing?
"Hormone panel" is a broad term. Different testing goals may involve different markers.
Depending on the service selected, Avendano's laboratory menu includes endocrine and hormone testing such as testosterone-related markers, SHBG, cortisol and other options.
The correct combination depends on why you are testing. Someone monitoring an existing hormone treatment may need different laboratory markers than someone establishing a baseline.
For individual hormone and endocrine markers currently offered through Avendano Health, browse the General Lab Work menu before scheduling.

What Does an "Abnormal" Lab Result Mean?
Not necessarily what Google tells you it means.
Reference ranges help identify results that fall outside an expected interval, but results must be interpreted in context.
Your age, sex, medications, hydration, fasting status, health history and other factors can influence results. Different laboratories may also use different methods or reference intervals.
Laboratory tests provide important health information, but they do not provide the complete clinical picture by themselves.
That is why a result outside the reference range should be discussed with a qualified healthcare professional rather than self-diagnosed from a single number.
Individual Tests vs. Wellness Bundles: Which Should You Choose?
If you already know the exact marker you need, start with General Lab Work.
If your goal is to evaluate several commonly requested wellness markers in one testing pathway, compare the available Wellness Bundles.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does a CBC measure?
A CBC measures blood-cell components including red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, hemoglobin and hematocrit.
What does a CMP measure?
A CMP includes 14 measurements involving glucose, electrolytes, proteins and markers related to kidney and liver function.
Does an abnormal blood test mean I have a disease?
Not necessarily. Laboratory values need to be interpreted alongside medical history, symptoms, medications and other clinical information.
Should I order individual tests or a bundle?
If you need one specific marker, individual testing may be more appropriate. If you want several common wellness measurements together, a bundle may provide a simpler testing pathway.
