Sometimes the biggest obstacle to getting blood work is not the blood draw. It is everything that traditionally comes before it.
You may already know that you want to check a specific laboratory marker, repeat a test you have monitored before, complete routine wellness testing, or obtain private testing without involving insurance.
In those situations, scheduling a separate medical appointment solely to obtain a laboratory referral can add time, cost and another step between you and the information you are trying to obtain.
Avendano Health provides eligible General Lab Work through a direct-access cash-pay pathway in Boca Raton, allowing patients to select available laboratory testing without first obtaining a traditional referral.
Local in-office laboratory appointments are available Monday through Friday by appointment.
The important distinction is this: Being able to order eligible laboratory testing without a separate referral does not mean medical care is unnecessary.
Ordering a laboratory test and diagnosing a medical condition are two different things. Direct-access testing is designed to make appropriate laboratory access easier—not to replace medical evaluation when symptoms, abnormal results or health concerns require it.
What Does "No Referral Needed" Actually Mean?
In a traditional laboratory pathway, a healthcare professional evaluates you and sends an order to a laboratory. A direct-access pathway removes that separate referral step for eligible tests.
Instead, you can review the available laboratory menu, choose the testing that matches your goal, see the cash-pay price and schedule collection directly.
For patients who already know what they need, this can eliminate an unnecessary administrative step.
If you know the exact marker you want, start with Avendano Health's General Lab Work menu.
If you want several commonly requested wellness markers together, compare Wellness Lab Bundles.

When Can No-Referral Testing Be Useful?
You already know which marker you want to monitor
Maybe you have previously followed a thyroid marker, cholesterol, HbA1c, Vitamin D, hormone level or another laboratory value. If the goal is simply to obtain eligible repeat laboratory testing, direct access may remove the need for a separate appointment whose only purpose is producing another lab order.
That does not mean you should independently change medication or treatment based on the result. Monitoring and treatment decisions are separate issues.
You want a general wellness baseline
Some people are not looking for one specific test. They want several common markers together. In that situation, a Wellness Bundle may be more practical than choosing individual tests one by one.
You are paying directly instead of using insurance
Direct-access testing can also appeal to people who are uninsured, have high deductibles, or prefer a cash-pay route. Avendano Health displays pricing before booking so patients can review the cost before proceeding.
Privacy matters to you
Some patients prefer not to route routine or sensitive testing through insurance. Avendano Health's Local Lab uses a private cash-pay pathway. For sexual-health testing specifically, use the dedicated Drug & STD Testing service rather than selecting unrelated tests from a general menu.
You want testing without visiting the clinic
No-referral testing does not necessarily mean you must come to the Boca Raton office. For eligible testing and service areas, Avendano Health also offers Mobile Phlebotomy, allowing professional specimen collection at a home, office or other supported location.
When Should You NOT Treat No-Referral Testing as a Substitute for Medical Care?
Convenient laboratory access is useful. It is not emergency care.
If you have severe or rapidly worsening symptoms, chest pain, difficulty breathing, fainting, severe bleeding, signs of stroke or another possible emergency, do not wait for routine laboratory testing. Seek appropriate emergency medical care.
You should also consider clinician involvement when:
- you do not know which test is appropriate,
- your symptoms are unexplained or worsening,
- a previous result was significantly abnormal,
- you are considering changing medication,
- you are pregnant or have a complex medical condition,
- the meaning of the result is unclear,
- repeat or confirmatory testing may be necessary.
A laboratory number is information. It is not automatically a diagnosis.
Is No-Referral Testing the Same as Self-Diagnosis?
No. Direct access changes how you obtain eligible testing. It does not change the basic principles of medical interpretation.
For example, a TSH result outside a reference range may suggest that additional thyroid evaluation is appropriate. It does not, by itself, explain the cause. A CBC can identify blood-cell measurements outside the laboratory's reference interval. It does not automatically tell you why they are abnormal. A hormone value can provide useful information. It should still be interpreted according to the test, timing, medications, symptoms, age, sex and clinical context.
Use direct-access testing to obtain useful information—not to force a diagnosis from one number.
How Fast Can No-Referral Testing Be?
Removing the separate referral step can shorten the path between deciding to test and having your specimen collected. Most standard Avendano Local Lab tests are generally listed with results in approximately 24–48 hours, depending on the specific test.
That does NOT mean every service has the same turnaround time. Select Rapid In-House Testing options operate differently and may provide results during the visit. Standard send-out laboratory testing should not be described as "instant" or "rapid" unless that specific service supports it.
